Carrizo Groundwater Supply Project – Well Field and Raw Water Transmission
For more than 16 years, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) has been developing a multi-phase water supply project with the intent of meeting the rapidly growing water demands within the Interstate Highway (IH) 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio. Recognizing the cost of such a large project, GBRA has entered into a partnership with Alliance Regional Water Authority (ARWA) to develop, treat, and distribute groundwater from the Carrizo Aquifer. Cooperative implementation of the initial phases of each entity’s project will result in significant cost savings, with the bulk of the project being funded through the Texas Water Development Board through the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas (SWIFT) program. Each entity will develop their own groundwater supply system and transport the developed groundwater to a groundwater treatment plant. Shared facilities include the groundwater treatment plant sourced from the GBRA and ARWA well fields and treated water transmission facilities delivering up to 30,000 acre-ft/yr (26.8 MGD) from the groundwater treatment plant to Lockhart, San Marcos, Goforth Special Utility District (SUD), Crystal Clear SUD, Green Valley SUD, New Braunfels Utility (NBU) and others. GBRA has obtained several groundwater leases in Caldwell and Gonzales Counties, and currently holds a production permit from the Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District to provide up to 15,000 acre-ft/yr , with the available lease area to provide additional capacity as the demand increases. This presentation will focus on the development of the GBRA groundwater well field and the associated pumping and transmission infrastructure required to transport the groundwater from the well field to the shared water treatment plant.
