Evaluation & Repair of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) Damage to Existing Concrete Wastewater Infrastructure
Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) is a deleterious internal expansion in Portland Cement concrete caused by the reaction between alkali from the cement and/or pozzolans and reactive silica aggregates in the presence of moisture. ASR has resulted in significant damage to concrete infrastructure throughout the United States and Worldwide.
This presentation discusses ASR with a focus on the evaluation and repair of existing wastewater concrete infrastructure. This infrastructure is particularly susceptible to ASR because much of it is used to convey and contain water, which raises the internal humidly in the concrete over extended time periods. Additionally, a brief case study will be presented which illustrates the evaluation of existing wastewater infrastructure for ASR and how a structure affected by ASR can be repaired and its service life extended in a cost-effective manner.
